Facts about Delaware, OH
Founded in 1808, Delaware is the county seat of Delaware County. Unlike some other communities, the wait for incorporation was not a lengthy one; the city was officially incorporated in 1816.
With a population of slightly under 35,000, Delaware is part of the Columbus-Marion-Chillicothe, OH Combined Statistical Area. Found just 30 miles north of Columbus, the city offers a small town feel while offering big city amenities.
While a small village at the time, Delaware was considered as a possibility when plans were made to move the state capital from Chillicothe. Ultimately, that honor went to Columbus, and Delaware settled into becoming a suburb.
Delaware has a number of historic sites to see. It’s home to Ohio’s Wesleyan University as well as the Methodist Theological School of Ohio. The Strand Theatre is the oldest movie theater in the state, and considered one of the top 10 oldest theaters in the nation. The Arts Castle offers classes as well as exhibits, and the fact that the city is a college town ensures there’s an abundance of cuisines, music, and sports related events to enjoy.
